Over the past month, I’ve been traveling the world to meet up with SMPTE Members and attend key industry trade shows. I started in Croatia at the EBU Tech Assembly, moved on to a SMPTE Standards Meeting in Tokyo, and then went on to Singapore for ConnecTech Asia. After a quick stop in London for an IBC Board meeting, I took the long journey to Sydney for the SMPTE METexpo, the newly renamed and re-imagined version of SMPTE Australia’s biennial technical conference.
The timing of these visits couldn’t have been better. Since the start of 2019, SMPTE has been moving forward in realizing the goals of our new three-year strategic business plan, and it’s both exciting and rewarding to see the early results of our work in developing and executing the plan. The Society, its membership, and even the greater motion-imaging community are adapting in many ways so that they can better address the demands of a quickly changing industry.
While I’ve been time-zone hopping, the staff back in White Plains has been working away to make the upcoming SMPTE annual technical conference better than ever. SMPTE 2019 is coming up fast, but you still have a little time to take advantage of our early bird pricing. (The special pricing ends 27 July, so register soon!)
Check out this issue and learn more about the work SMPTE is doing — and how you can participate.
Register early to maximize your savings and attend this reimagined must-attend event! Featuring high-quality technical papers, exciting curated content, an exclusive exhibit hall, and engaging social events, SMPTE 2019 aims to provide something for everyone – from students and early career professionals to seasoned engineering executives. While bandwidth is an important factor in the overall equation of an optimally functioning storage solution, a bigger culprit may actually be latency. You should not confuse latency with the bandwidth of a storage solution. Latency is the lag-time between read/write command issued and the response of that command, created either by distance or by physical operations at the storage component level. Latency certainly is affected by other performance factors such as bandwidth and throughput, but ultimately certain aspects of latency can be controlled within the storage solution itself. OpenDrives greatly reduces latency through a memory-first approach to data storage, leveraging the speed and efficiency of RAM memory to cache data and the intelligence of the operating system to control how that RAM memory is used.
